Types of Cancer

Breast cancer originates in the cells of the breast and can affect both men and women, though it is far more common in women. Early detection through screening and awareness of risk factors can significantly improve outcomes. Treatment options include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy.

Ovarian cancer begins in the ovaries and is often not detected until it has spread within the pelvis and abdomen. Symptoms can be vague, making early diagnosis challenging. Treatment typically involves surgery and chemotherapy.

Cervical cancer starts in the cells lining the cervix and is often linked to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Regular Pap smears can help in early detection. Treatment options include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Uterine cancer starts in the lining of the uterus and often presents with abnormal vaginal bleeding. Treatment usually involves surgery, and may be combined with radiation or chemotherapy depending on the stage of the cancer.

Prostate cancer occurs in the prostate gland, which is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is one of the most common cancers in men. Treatment options vary from watchful waiting to surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy.

Lung cancer starts in the lungs and can spread to other parts of the body. Risk factors include smoking and exposure to certain toxins. Treatment options depend on the type and stage of cancer and may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy.

Colorectal cancer affects the colon or rectum and can be preceded by polyps, which are benign growths. Early detection through screening can improve prognosis. Treatment often involves surgery, and may be combined with chemotherapy and radiation.

Skin cancer includes melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and can spread to other parts of the body. Prevention includes protecting the skin from excessive sun exposure, and treatment varies based on type and stage.

Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, characterised by an abnormal increase in white blood cells. Treatment depends on the type of leukaemia and may include chemotherapy, radiation, and bone marrow transplants.

Lymphoma starts in the lymphatic system and includes Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Symptoms often include swollen lymph nodes, fever, and weight loss. Treatment options may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapies.

Pancreatic cancer begins in the pancreas and is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. Symptoms can be vague and include abdominal pain, jaundice, and weight loss. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy.

Kidney cancer begins in the kidneys and can cause symptoms such as blood in the urine and back pain. Treatment may involve surgery, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, depending on the stage and type of cancer.

Bladder cancer starts in the lining of the bladder and may cause symptoms like blood in the urine and frequent urination. Treatment often involves surgery, chemotherapy, and sometimes immunotherapy.

Esophageal cancer starts in the oesophagus and may cause difficulty swallowing and chest pain. Treatment options depend on the stage and may include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Oral cancer can occur in any part of the mouth and is often linked to tobacco use and alcohol consumption. Early detection through regular dental check-ups can improve outcomes. Treatment typically includes surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
